Leatherman 930711 Nylon Sheath with Belt Loop
Regardless of the size or make of multitool, it is necessary to have some convenient method of carrying it. Stuffing a multitool into a pocket is not the best possible solution – some work clothes may have pockets that have been worn thin by years of use, and placing a heavy metal object with points and edges into one may cause the implement to break through after a time, possibly falling out on the ground or sliding down your trouser-leg. Even if your pockets are sound and large enough to contain the tool comfortably, the poorly-distributed weight in your pants or jacket will be inconvenient for you.
This is true of even such a lightweight, stripped-down, no-nonsense version of a multitool as the Leatherman Skeletool, which provides full-sized functionality in a 5-ounce package. These multitools are extremely light for their size, but they still need to be carried conveniently in order to both keep them safe and to keep them from interfering with your movements while ensuring that you can reach them in a moment when work needs to be done.
Of the ten individual models of Skeletool, six of them come only with a carabineer clip (designed to serve as a bottle opener as well) as their carrying equipment. This clip is sturdily made and integral to the Skeletool, however, so you do not need to worry about it coming off as some separate clips have been known to on other models of multitool.
The carabineer clip is large enough to clamp easily onto a standard-sized belt loop, and users report that it is convenient place to carry the Skeletool. However, the tool is still directly exposed to both the elements and to any knocks, scrapes, or blows that may come its way, and despite its tungsten coating, there is still a chance of long-term damage to the tool if it is worn this way on the worksite or outdoors.
Four of the individual Skeletools – two standard and two CX versions – include a nylon sheath as well as the carabineer clip. The sheath is black, with a belt loop for mounting the implement to your favorite work belt, and is covered by the same 25-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship that the multitools themselves boast.
It comes with a Velcro closure – although the Velcro is easier to open and close than a snap fastener, and is more appropriate for the nylon sheath, it will wear out after a time, or become hopelessly clogged with oil or other debris. Those handy with a needle and thread may find it simplest to attach new Velcro periodically. The sheath is convenient in that it keeps your Skeletool snugly protected against accidental knocks, rain, and splashes, and is a good choice for those who will be carrying their Skeletool in potentially damaging conditions.
